Phylogeny and phylogeography of African Saturnidae (Lepidoptera)
Saturnidae is a family of large nocturnal Lepidoptera with a considerable representation in Africa, where 44 genera have been reported. This project aims 1) to obtain sequences of mitochondrial COI and COII DNA genes as well as of the Ribossomal 16s gene in order 2) to study the relations among 40 species within 16 genera occurring in Guinea-Bissau 3) to obtain a phylogeny of these taxa. Upon success in the first part, the sample can be enlarged with some other species of Saturnidae from Central African countries (Gabon, Tanzania) and Europe in order 4) to address issues on a phylogeographical approach.
The work will be developed at the CoBiG², Departamento de Biologia Animal (FCUL, University of Lisboa) from September 2010 to July 2011, and will be supervised by researchers at the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical and Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisboa.
MSc - Barcoding the trouble: Are identification-challenging butterflies distinguishable through this revolutionary molecular identification tool?
In the last years, the use of molecular analysis has been applied to many aspects of traditional biological sciences from conservation to taxonomy and shaped the way we now perceive them, shaking the species concepts and evolution itself in the process.
MSc - The genetic structure of an iberian endemic butterfly, related to a widespread eurasian species and their contact zone: What underlies their separation?
The Iberian Peninsula has long been recognized as being a melting-pot of biological diversity and a refuge of several fairly ancient lineages contra the general European wipe-out of genetic diversity after the successive Quaternary Ice Ages. This was mainly promoted by the transitional contacts with North Africa, its southern position and isolation by the Pyrenees which resulted in the Iberian Peninsula being one of the most biodiverse areas in the whole Mediterranean biome for most groups but particularly plants and insects. In this regard, butterflies represent optimal models for the study of differentiation because of their well known formal taxonomy yet the interactions between lineages in the Iberian Peninsula and what defines an endemic unit have only been superficially studied.
MSc - Genetic differentiation of Passer domesticus with microssatelites
Study the genetic differentiation and the gene flow among several populations/demes of Passer domesticus. This project includes sampling and microsatellites analyses of 180 individuals and 12 microsats.

Data analysis of surveys data analyze the spatial pattern of Chameleons and Lizards.
MSc - Home range analysis of Lizards and Chameleons
Data analysis of radio tracking data and observations data to study the spatial pattern of Chameleons and Lizards.
MSc - Phylogenetics of forest trees
Study the phylogenetic relationship among several species of forest of the Mediterranean area by the use of several molecular markers.
